article | A single unit of information stored in a Personal Knowbase data file. An article has a title, date, time, content (text), and any number of keywords. |

article date | The primary date associated with an article, usually the date when it was first created or most recently modified. |
article time | The primary time associated with an article, usually the time when it was first created or most recently modified. |
Article Window | The Article Window displays the information for a single article from the current data file. For more information, see Article Window. |
ASCII text file | See text file. |
attachment | An attachment is the name of a disk file, folder, or Internet address (URL) associated with an article. |

bookmark | A bookmark marks an article for instant access using the Bookmark Article Command (Article Menu). |

Cardfile | The Cardfile accessory program distributed with Microsoft Windows 3.1. This program is not distributed with later versions of Windows. Personal Knowbase can import files from Cardfile format. |
Clipboard | A temporary storage area provided by Windows for cut or copied data. The current contents of the Clipboard may be pasted into a compatible application. The Clipboard stores the data until another selection is cut or copied. |
CSV file | Comma-Separated Values. This is a standard delimited file format which stores text fields in columns separated by commas. Most spreadsheet programs can read and write files in this format. |
Custom Import Format | A customized import format defines the format of a text file containing information that you want to import into a Personal Knowbase data file. This user-defined format maps areas of the imported text file to the article's content, title, date, keywords, and/or attachment fields. |
Custom import formats are stored in files with the extension KNF.

data file | Personal Knowbase associates the extension KNO with its data files. A data file consists of any number of keywords and articles. Any number of data files may be open at once by opening multiple copies of the software. |
date | See article date. |
dragging | To drag a listed item or a group of items: |
• | Highlight the item(s) in the first list. |
• | Click on one of the selected items, holding down the left mouse button. |
• | Move the mouse cursor to the target list. |
• | Release the left mouse button. |
exporting | Exporting writes text from Personal Knowbase articles into external text files which you can then open in other applications such as word processors. For more information, see the Export Command (File Menu). |
group | See keyword group. |
HTML file | Hyper-Text Markup Language. This is the standard format used to create pages on the World Wide Web. You can save a Web page to an HTML file on your PC from your Web browser. |
hypertext Link | A hypertext link in an article links any arbitrary text to a file or folder name, an Internet address, or another article. For more information, see About Hypertext Links in Article Windows. |
Image Gallery | An optional pane at the bottom of the Article Window which displays icons for article attachments, including thumbnails of image file attachments. See Article Window: Image Gallery. |
importing | Importing brings text into Personal Knowbase articles from external files which were written by other applications. These external files may be flat text files, formatted text files, or other types of formatted files. For more information, see the Import Command (File Menu). |
Index | All of the keywords in a Knowbase data file together are referred to as its Index. The Index is listed in the Index column of the Index Window. |
Index Report | The Index Report displays a list of the articles associated with specified keywords. For more information, see Index Report Window. |
Index Window | The Index Window is the main window for organizing and accessing your current data file. It displays keywords and article titles for the entire file. For more information, see Index Window. |
Internet address | See URL. |
Insert mode | When you type text into the Article Window in Insert mode, the new text is inserted at the cursor location. Also see Overwrite Mode. You can toggle between Insert and Overwrite modes by pressing the Ins key. |
keyboard shortcut | A keyboard sequence that performs a common menu command without using the mouse. For a list of shortcuts available in Personal Knowbase, see Keyboard Shortcuts. |
keyword | A word or phrase assigned to one or more articles as a means of indexing those articles. All keywords in the current data file are displayed in the Index Window. Keywords are used to retrieve related items. |

keyword group | Keyword groups provide a way to group keywords to facilitate finding keywords in a large index. For a detailed discussion of keyword groups, see About Keyword Groups. |
Keyword Usage Report | The Keyword Usage Report displays a count of the articles associated with a list of specified keywords. For more information, see Keyword Usage Report Window. |
operand | In a query or logical expression, the items being operated on. In Personal Knowbase queries, the operands include keywords, a lack of keywords, being bookmarked, having attachments, or being associated with a keyword group. For more information, see About Queries and Logical Operations. |
operator | In a query or logical expression, the functions being applied to the operands. In Personal Knowbase queries, possible operators are AND, OR, and NOT. For more information, see About Queries and Logical Operations. |
Overwrite mode | When you type text into the Article Window in Overwrite mode, your typed text overwrites any previous text. Also see Insert Mode. You can toggle between Insert and Overwrite modes by pressing the Ins key. |
password protection | Personal Knowbase supports article-level and file-level password protection. For more information, see About Passwords and Privacy. |
pop-up menus | Pop-up menus allow you to perform common commands by clicking the right mouse button. For more information, see Pop-up Menus. |
private articles | Articles which have been individually password-protected. For more information, see About Passwords and Privacy. |
query | A query is a logical expression which combines keywords using the operators AND, OR, and NOT. For more information, see About Queries and Logical Operations. |
relative link paths | Attachments and hypertext links to files which use incomplete path names can be located relative to another specified folder location. For more information, see About File Links and Relative Paths. |
reminder | A reminder pops up an alert associated with an article at a specified date and time. For more information, see About Reminders. |
RTF or Rich Text Format file | This is a standard word processing file format which stores text and font formatting information. Most word processors can read and write files in this format. |
shortcut | See keyboard shortcut. |
target | The object or location which an attachment, hypertext link, or active link points to. A target can be a disk file or folder, a URL, or (for hypertext links only) another Knowbase article. |
text file | Text files, also called ASCII files, are simple files containing text and no formatting. A common extension for text files is TXT. Personal Knowbase can import text files. |
time | See article time. |
URL | Uniform Resource Locator. This is the address of a document on the Internet. The following types of URLs are recognized for links in exported HTML files, hypertext and active links in article text, and Internet Address article attachments: |
