Linking to Files Relative to an Arbitrary Folder

Glossary  Return to Start  Previous  Next

Normally, for all data files, all attachment files with incomplete paths are located relative to a single folder specified in the Preferences Dialog Box. However, you may want to keep attachment files for different data files in different locations. To do this, you can arbitrarily specify a different relative path folder for each data file.

If you use this option, you can later move all files which use relative links to a different folder and then change this specified path to the new location in order to restore the links.

NOTE:For more information on the use of relative paths in locating targets of file links, see About File Links and Relative Paths.

If you change the way that Personal Knowbase locates files with incomplete paths, this setting affects the targets of attachments, hypertext links, and actives links.

To locate linked files with incomplete paths relative to an arbitrary folder:

Select the File Properties command from the File menu.

The File Properties dialog box is displayed.

Select the Articles tab.

In the section for Location for Targets of Relative Links, select the option for Specify Path.

Click on the Browse button.

The Browse for Folder dialog box is displayed.

Navigate to the folder that you want to use to locate linked files with incomplete paths.

Click the OK button to select the folder.

You return to the File Properties dialog box. At the bottom of the section, after the word Location:, the selected folder is displayed.

Note for portable installations:  The Specify Path option always uses an exact folder. If you are running Personal Knowbase from a portable device, this option will not adjust to be relative to the portable drive. When using relative paths in conjunction with portable drives, we recommend using one of the other two options for locating relative links.

Under that section, click on the checkbox to remove the check mark for Save full pathnames for new file or folder targets.

This causes all new articles that you create in this data file to use relative links by default. In this case, all links that you create to files in the relative path location will automatically have incomplete path names so that they will always be treated as relative links.

Note that this setting does not apply to existing articles. To cause existing articles to automatically create relative links, un-check the corresponding checkbox in the Articles Properties of each affected article.

Select the OK button to exit the File Properties dialog box.

Personal Knowbase warns you that you have changed the path used for relative links.

Click Yes to accept the change.

NOTE:Use relative links with caution and planning, since changing your option for locating relative links can break every incomplete file link in your data file.
